Riboflavin (B2)

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) – is a coenzyme needed for proper functioning of mitochondria within the brain. Recent research suggests that deficits in mitochondrial functioning may be present during migraine headaches. Riboflavin acts, as coenzymes, to increase the activity of flavoenzymes in the mitochondria and can help improve functioning in persons with abnormal brain energy metabolism. *

Feverfew

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium), a dried leaf used in migraine prophylaxis, may have anti-inflammatory and antiserotonin properties. Feverfew has been shown to be an effective herb for migraine prevention in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies. Feverfew’s active ingredient, parthenolide, appears to have multiple benefits for the central nervous system. *

Butterbur

Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) has been used throughout history as a medicinal plant and its extract has shown promising results in reducing migraine attacks. Potential benefits for migraine prophylaxis include butterbur’s anti-inflammatory properties and the activity of its co-active ingredient, petasins, to block Ca2+ channels (calcium channels) in the brain that may play a role in migraine headaches. The most current explanations for the cause of migraine headaches include neurogenic inflammation and vasoconstriction. Butterbur is a promising prophylactic aid in the prevention of migraine headaches as it has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and vasodilating properties in the brain. *

Ginkgo Biloba

The active agents in Ginkgo biloba leaves contain Ginkgolide B, a natural form of PAF (anti-platelet activating factor) involved in the inflammatory process of the brain, a process shown to be linked to the creation of migraine headaches. Ginkgolide B also helps to regulate the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, glutamate, which at abnormal levels can lead to migraine pain. Ginkgo biloba has been shown to have several medicinal properties that may assist with headaches, such as dilation of blood vessels in the brain, regulation of neurotransmitters, reducing blood viscosity, and the neutralization of oxygen free radicals. *
